LYNDALL BENSLEY

CERAMIC ARTIST

ABOUT ME

Artist’s Statement:

I only came back to my love, my passion – clay - about 4 years ago.  My aim has been to create marine life sculptures that will take you under the sea to a world you don’t usually see unless you are a scuba diver, surfer, or fisherperson.  I try to be true to the animal – represent them as they truly are – therefore, the clay –reused, reclaimed earth – that I use to create these sculptures is indicative of the ecological representation that I hope to convey with my art.

I don’t want people to have to squish their eyes to figure out what the sculpture represents.  I want people that aren’t into art and are not artists to enjoy my art.  I also hope that people can learn something along the way.

The marine life that I sculpt is endangered and are predominantly from this area.  I am amazed at their beauty and how we (people) are not taking care of them and ignorant to how we are damaging their homes.  Just because they are under the sea and we can’t see them, doesn’t mean we should ignore them.

I am intrigued by what’s beneath the water we see.  I am amazed by the beauty and evolution of the creatures, their shapes, colours and defence mechanisms.  I spend many hours researching a piece in order to get the proportions right, test the colours and pray they do what I want them to do during the firing process.
